If you are a Gmail user and you try to use gmail pop3 setings to access your mail directly from your desktop using any of the desktop mail software like MS outlook or directly from your mail enabled Mobile phone like Blackberry and can't access your mail, Then you have an alternative method. That is gmail imap settings.
With gmail imap settings configured, you can access all your gmail mails through gmail imap mail on to your Desktop to your desktop email client software to read mails even you are offline.
Google’s Gmail supports both POP3 and IMAP access. We earlier discussed about how to enable Gmail POP3 and configure Gmail POP3 & Gmail SMTP settings to access Gmail mails. In this article, we will cover the steps to enable Gmail IMAP.
How is Gmail IMAP protocol different from Gmail POP3 protocol?
Gmail IMAP is a better method than POP3 protocol, as it offers two-way communication between your web Gmail and your email client. This means when you log in to Gmail using a web browser, actions you perform on email clients and mobile devices, for example putting mails in a ‘work’ folder, will instantly and automatically appear in Gmail i.e. it will already have a ‘work’ label on that email the next time you sign in. IMAP makes this possible as it creates a constant connection between mail clients (desktop and/or mobile) and Gmail. POP3 protocol is more prone to losing messages or downloading the same messages multiple times. Unlike POP3, IMAP provides a more stable user experience primarily due to its two-way syncing capabilities between web Gmail and mail clients.
