Microsoft has released the new version of Autoruns 9.5 this week. It has the extra feature to list all the installed codecs in a computer. I could tell you it is an essential tool when I was troubleshooting a virus problem. Let’s see what is this tool all about ( for those who dont know about this wonderful tool) Autoruns will show you what programs are configured to run during system bootup or login, and shows you the entries in the order Windows processes them. These programs include ones in your startup folder, Run, RunOnce, and other Registry keys. You can configure Autoruns to show other locations, including Explorer shell extensions, toolbars, browser helper objects, Winlogon notifications, auto-start services, and much more. Autoruns goes way beyond the MSConfig utility bundled with Windows Me and XP.

The new option which you can find in this tool is the Tab called Codec which displays multimedia codecs “which are gaining popularity as an extension mechanism used by malware gains automatic execution.” This will display all the codes including the windows ones. You can hide all the windows codes by clicking on the Options>Hide Microsoft and Windows entries and verify all the malware codecs.
